Australia has marked World Maritime Day by highlighting a year of joint work with Papua New Guinea aimed at building a safer, more resilient and inclusive maritime sector, according to the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby.
Over the past 12 months, the two countries have advanced major infrastructure rehabilitation at Kimbe Port, with plans progressing for further port investments at Lae, Oro Bay, Daru and Kavieng. Maritime capability has also been strengthened through the delivery of new pilot boats and critical power system upgrades at ports managed by PNG Ports Corporation Limited.
The partnership has additionally supported PNG's Department of Transport in progressing reforms to strengthen maritime governance and modernise the country's maritime legislative framework.
On gender inclusion, Australia has backed an initiative by PNG's National Maritime Safety Authority to re-establish the Papua New Guinea Women in Maritime Association, aimed at creating leadership opportunities, career pathways and greater participation for women across the sector.
Officials said the work reflected an ongoing commitment to helping PNG build safer seas, stronger institutions and greater opportunities for communities across the country.
