Honouring a shared legacy: PNG–Australia partnership remembered on Remembrance Day

Following Remembrance Day, Papua New Guinea and Australia reflect on their enduring partnership forged in times of both war and peace. Among the heroes commemorated is Sergeant Katue, awarded the Military Medal for his courageous intelligence-gathering efforts during the pivotal battles around Lae and Salamaua in July 1942.

Operating behind enemy lines across several miles, Sergeant Katue’s daring reconnaissance provided critical information that allowed Allied forces to secure strategic positions and slow the enemy advance. His repeated missions on the nights of July 22–23 and July 26–27 contributed significantly to the campaign’s success.

The legacy of these conflicts remains vivid today in Morobe Province, with sites such as the Lae War Cemetery serving as solemn reminders of sacrifice. From the vantage point of the Consulate-General, Salamaua stands as a daily testament to the bravery of Sergeant Katue and countless others who fought for freedom from tyranny.

As PNG and Australia honour these shared histories, the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations continue to guide their partnership into the future.
