Community Demands Justice Following Tragic Death During Highlands Region Celebrations

A young man tragically lost his life last weekend during the Highlands Region celebrations hosted by the Amazing Port Moresby Independence Festival and the National Capital District Commission (NCDC). Reports allege that the teenager died from a gunshot wound sustained when security forces opened fire into a rowdy crowd.

The incident has sparked outrage among community members from Kone, the young man’s home village, who have gathered at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium to demand justice and accountability. The protesters are calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the death of their relative.

Voicing their grief and frustration, community leaders emphasized the need for answers and assurances that such tragic events will not recur. “We want the police and security forces to explain why live ammunition was used on our people,” one community spokesperson said. “Our young man’s life was taken — we deserve the truth and justice.”

The ongoing demonstration highlights the community’s demand for respectful and responsible security measures during public events, as well as the protection of civilians’ rights. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident or investigations underway.

As tensions remain high, many in Kone and across Port Moresby are calling on the government and law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and fairly to restore peace and confidence among affected communities.
