Marie Stopes Papua New Guinea (MSPNG), with support from the Australian Government, successfully convened a high-level panel discussion in Port Moresby to commemorate World Population Day 2025. The event centered around the theme “Transforming Population Challenges into Opportunities for Sustainable Development,” reflecting the global focus on empowering young people to shape a better future.
The discussion provided a critical national platform to spotlight how strategic investments in sexual and reproductive health (SRH), youth empowerment, and gender equality can accelerate inclusive development across Papua New Guinea—a country where over 60% of the population is under the age of 25.
Keynote speaker Professor Glen Mola, Academic Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology, delivered a compelling address underscoring the urgent need for stable and sustainable population growth as a foundation for national progress. The expert panel included prominent figures such as Mr. John Igitoi, National Statistician; Mr. Paul Barker; Dr. Rena Dona from UNFPA; and Ms. Angelyn Famudi from Marie Stopes PNG. Together, they engaged in thoughtful dialogue on pivotal issues including family planning, education, economic empowerment, and the critical role of accurate population data in development planning.
With the 2024 National Census data soon to be released, panelists emphasized the importance of robust and reliable population statistics for effective service delivery, resource allocation, and policy formulation. The event called for strengthened coordination among government agencies, development partners, and civil society to design policies that target youth skills development and expand accessible, youth-friendly SRH services.
Participants highlighted that empowering Papua New Guinea’s young people is not only a social imperative but a key economic strategy that will drive the country toward sustained prosperity and equitable growth. The discussion closed with a strong commitment to continued collaboration and investment to ensure a fairer, healthier, and more hopeful future for all Papua New Guineans.
Marie Stopes PNG extends heartfelt gratitude to all panelists, partners, and stakeholders who contributed to the event’s success. Together, let us keep advancing the shared vision of transforming population challenges into sustainable opportunities.
