In a significant step toward strengthening peaceful conflict resolution, 21 senior justice officials in Bougainville recently completed the region’s inaugural Basic Mediation Skills Training (BMST). Conducted from July 21 to 25, the program introduced participants to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) — a process increasingly recognised for its speed, affordability, and cultural relevance compared to conventional court proceedings.
Facilitated by Deputy Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi alongside judicial experts from Papua New Guinea, the training brought together a diverse group of justice sector representatives, including police officers, magistrates, village court officials, correctional services personnel, and members of Bougainville’s Department of Justice and Legal Services.
This milestone initiative was supported by the Australian Government under the Australia–Papua New Guinea Law and Justice Partnership, reflecting ongoing regional efforts to enhance legal capacity and promote culturally grounded justice mechanisms.
By equipping officials with mediation skills, Bougainville is fostering a justice system that values dialogue and community-based solutions, supporting long-term peace and stability in the autonomous region.
