Francis Otto Gundu Named ZAA Employee of the Year in Recognition of PNG Conservation Efforts

Port Moresby Nature Park’s Conservation Manager, Francis Otto Gundu, has been honoured with the prestigious “ZAA Employee of the Year” award at the Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia (ZAA) annual meeting, held recently in Darwin, Australia.

The award recognises Mr Gundu’s outstanding contribution to conservation in Papua New Guinea and across the region. His leadership and commitment to protecting the country’s unique biodiversity were highlighted through a presentation on Port Moresby Nature Park’s newly established partnership with the IUCN Species Survival Commission, aimed at safeguarding PNG’s native flora and fauna.

Mr Gundu’s achievement was not the only highlight from the PNG team. Wildlife Officer Ms. Bonnie Irima Bilson also delivered a well-received presentation on the park’s successful bird-of-paradise breeding program, which celebrates 50 years of PNG’s independence with a focus on the Raggiana bird-of-paradise — the country’s national symbol.

Both presentations received strong applause from conservation experts and delegates representing institutions across Australia and New Zealand.

Port Moresby Nature Park acknowledged the support of key partners, including Synchronicity Earth and conservationist Miriam Supuma, in enabling the success of their ongoing initiatives.

The recognition of Mr Gundu’s work not only shines a light on individual excellence but also reflects the dedication of the entire Nature Park team in promoting conservation leadership in Papua New Guinea.
