Acting Governor-General Hon. Job Pomat has called on all Papua New Guineans to honour the legacy of the country’s war heroes by fostering unity, national discipline, and a renewed sense of collective purpose in modern society.
Delivering the keynote address at the 44th Remembrance Day commemorations held at the Remembrance Park in Port Moresby, Mr Pomat paid heartfelt tribute to the fallen servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives during World War II, including the many unsung heroes from rural communities who played critical roles in the nation’s defence.
“Today, we pay our respects not only to those in uniform, but also to the ordinary people from our villages who took part in the war effort — those who carried the wounded, delivered supplies, acted as lookouts, and guided soldiers across difficult terrain,” he said. “Their bravery, loyalty, and resilience laid the foundation of the free and independent Papua New Guinea we enjoy today.”
The solemn ceremony was attended by high-level dignitaries including Rear Admiral Commodore Philip Polewara, war veterans, the Governor of the National Capital District Hon. Powes Parkop, members of the diplomatic corps, Defence Force officers, civil society representatives, and citizens from all walks of life.
Mr Pomat reflected on the values of discipline and unity embodied by wartime heroes and emphasized the urgent need to restore those qualities in the country’s present-day communities. “As we remember the past, we must also look to the future. Let us honour our heroes not only with words, but with action — by rebuilding discipline in our homes, schools, and institutions, and standing together as one people.”
He noted that while Papua New Guinea continues to face social and economic challenges, the spirit of collective sacrifice and resilience that carried the nation through wartime adversity must be reignited to build a more just, peaceful, and prosperous society.
Remembrance Day remains a poignant occasion for Papua New Guineans to reflect on the cost of freedom, recognize the enduring contributions of the nation’s defence personnel, and recommit to the values that underpin national unity.
Lest we forget.
