PM Marape congratulates Vanuatu and PNG on Melanesian Cup triumphs

Prime Minister James Marape has extended his congratulations to Vanuatu for winning the men’s division of the Melanesian Cup, and to Papua New Guinea’s women’s national team for claiming the women’s title in Port Moresby.

Speaking on the significance of the tournament, Marape said the Cup “is a living expression of who we are as Melanesian peoples,” noting that the values of pride, unity, and kinship celebrated on the football field echo the shared history and cultures of Melanesia.

He praised the efforts of all participating teams, including the runners-up, saying the competition highlighted that excellence in football belongs to the region as a whole. “From Fiji to the Solomon Islands, from Vanuatu to PNG, we are one family. On the pitch, we stand shoulder to shoulder: fierce in competition, warm in friendship,” he said.

Marape also thanked visiting delegations, team staff, match officials, and supporters, emphasising the tournament’s role in Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations. He said it symbolises the strength, unity, and optimism that have guided the nation for five decades.

Looking ahead, he said PNG anticipates next year’s event in Fiji as another opportunity to celebrate Melanesian identity, foster regional solidarity, and elevate the sport across the Pacific.
