In a major step towards expanding access to clean energy, new solar mini-grids have been installed in remote communities across Oro and Central Provinces, providing reliable electricity to support essential services and community development. The initiative, delivered in partnership with KTF, forms part of PNG’s first project under REnew Pacific, Australia’s PGK187.6 million (AUD75 million) investment in off-grid renewable energy through the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership.
At Sanananda Aid Post, the mini-grid will power life-saving healthcare services for the 7,000 residents in the surrounding area, ensuring critical facilities can operate reliably and safely. Meanwhile, at the Mt Koiari FODE Centre along the Kokoda Track, more than 50 students will benefit from electricity for classrooms, digital learning tools, and satellite internet, enhancing educational opportunities in a region where power access has long been limited.
The project underscores the transformative potential of renewable energy in remote communities. Reliable electricity not only improves access to healthcare and education but also strengthens overall community resilience and fosters safer, more sustainable development in some of Papua New Guinea’s most isolated areas.
The solar installations are funded through Australia’s Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership and delivered via the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, highlighting the growing regional collaboration to support sustainable, off-grid energy solutions.
