Humanitarian assistance has been provided to 27 families from Joyce Bay, most of them originally from Gulf Province, after their homes were burned down in an outbreak of ethnic violence.
Announcing the support on Friday, Hon. Justin Tkatchenko MP said each affected family would receive a K10,000 voucher to purchase materials to rebuild their homes. The attack followed the death of a man from another ethnic group, sparking retaliatory violence that left dozens displaced.
Tkatchenko condemned the incident, warning against vigilantism. “No one should take the law into their own hands,” he said. “We have stepped in to stop unnecessary ethnic fighting, help families rebuild their homes, and allow the law to take its course.”
The intervention aims to restore calm and prevent further escalation in a community still reeling from the destruction.
