Papua New Guinea has honoured its founding father with the unveiling of a life-size statue of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare on the grounds of Parliament House.
The statue, which overlooks Parliament Drive, was revealed in a solemn ceremony on Thursday evening and blessed by His Eminence Sir John Cardinal Ribat, MSC.
The event brought together dignitaries, pioneer legislators, MPs, youth representatives, special guests, and members of Somare’s family, including his wife, First Lady Veronica Somare. Prime Minister James Marape and Speaker Job Pomat led the proceedings, which they described as a moment of national pride, gratitude, and reflection.
Sir Michael, who led PNG to independence in 1975 and served as prime minister for more than 17 years across three terms, was remembered for his humility, unity, and unwavering service to the nation.
Now standing at the heart of the country’s seat of democracy, the statue is intended to serve as a lasting reminder of the values he championed — unity, service, and hope.
