NZ Prime Minister Luxon arrives in PNG ahead of high-level talks

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon touched down in Port Moresby this evening, marking the start of his first official State Visit to Papua New Guinea.

Arriving aboard a Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft, Luxon was received at Jacksons International Airport by Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko, NCD Governor Powes Parkop, and New Zealand High Commissioner Peter Zwart. His delegation was later welcomed at a formal dinner hosted by Prime Minister James Marape at APEC Haus.

The visit comes at a pivotal time for PNG, which is preparing to mark its 50th anniversary of independence next month. Luxon’s presence underscores the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two Pacific neighbours, particularly in areas of trade, climate resilience, security cooperation, and regional diplomacy.

Over the next two days, Luxon is expected to engage in high-level bilateral discussions, visit key development sites, and participate in cultural engagements—further cementing New Zealand’s role as a close and active partner in PNG’s development journey.

This is Luxon’s first official visit to Papua New Guinea since becoming Prime Minister, and it aligns with a broader regional strategy by Wellington to deepen relationships in the Pacific at a time of intensifying geopolitical interest.

While no major announcements have yet been made, the visit may signal new or expanded cooperation initiatives, especially as PNG seeks to diversify its partnerships ahead of its independence jubilee.
