Advancing disability inclusion: Callan Connect enhances access to vital services in Papua New Guinea

In line with the Australian and New Zealand Governments’ commitment to inclusive development, the Callan Connect initiative is advancing the rights and well-being of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Papua New Guinea. Funded through the Australia-PNG Subnational Program, Callan Connect supports the Network of Callan Services for Persons with Disabilities (CSNU), the country’s largest disability service provider.

Earlier this year, Callan Connect conducted targeted screenings in Malasang, North Bougainville, reaching over 225 PWD—predominantly women—and issuing nearly 200 corrective glasses. These efforts are part of a broader program extending into Western Province and the Kokoda Track catchment areas.

Beyond screening and diagnosis, Callan Connect coordinates essential interventions including ear, eye, and physical healthcare, and facilitates access to surgeries by managing logistics such as travel, accommodation, and specialist support.

This initiative not only improves healthcare access for PWD in remote and underserved regions but also promotes economic participation and social inclusion, reflecting a holistic approach to disability rights and development in Papua New Guinea.
