During her recent visit to East New Britain Province, the British High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Her Excellency Anne Macro, was honoured to meet with the Governor of East New Britain, the Honourable Michael Marum. Their discussions focused on the Province’s unique strengths, development potential, and the complex challenges it faces in the areas of infrastructure, economic diversification, environmental sustainability, and disaster resilience. Governor Marum provided valuable insights into the Province’s current priorities, including efforts to attract investment, promote inclusive growth, and safeguard communities against natural hazards such as volcanic activity.
High Commissioner Macro also had the opportunity to meet with a number of British nationals who have chosen to make East New Britain their home. These individuals are making meaningful contributions across a wide range of sectors. Some are involved in environmental conservation, working alongside local partners to protect the region’s rich biodiversity and promote sustainable land and marine resource management. Others are supporting economic development initiatives, whether through agribusiness ventures, tourism, or education and skills training. Several are also engaged in scientific monitoring and early warning systems, helping to keep communities safe by tracking the activity of the region’s active volcanoes, including Mt. Tavurvur.
The High Commissioner expressed her admiration for the dedication and resilience of both the local authorities and the British community members who are actively contributing to East New Britain’s development and disaster preparedness. Her visit reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to working in partnership with Papua New Guinea at all levels—national, provincial, and community—to promote shared values, mutual prosperity, and long-term resilience.
