Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has issued a strong and heartfelt appeal to the people of Papua New Guinea—particularly the youth—calling for greater self-discipline, responsible behavior, and respect for public order in light of recent disturbances affecting communities across the country.
Speaking during a public address, the Prime Minister acknowledged the innate goodness of Papua New Guineans but expressed concern over a rise in disorderly and disruptive behavior.
“Deep down, I know that our people are good-hearted,” he said. “But at times, we become unruly—sometimes under the influence of alcohol or peer pressure—and cross the line. When that happens, the consequences spill over, affecting not only our cities and communities but also tarnishing the national image of Papua New Guinea.”
With the country preparing for a series of important national events and the upcoming general elections, Prime Minister Marape emphasized the critical need for calm, respect, and responsible citizenship.
“In times like these, it is essential for us to uphold values of discipline and mutual respect,” he said. “Our conduct reflects not just on ourselves, but on our families, our communities, and the future of our nation.”
He urged the youth of Papua New Guinea to rise above the pressures of their environment and serve as positive role models. “You have immense potential. Let your actions be a force for good—whether it’s through education, community leadership, or entrepreneurship,” he encouraged.
The Prime Minister’s appeal also stressed the collective responsibility of all citizens in shaping a peaceful and progressive nation.
“Each of us has a role to play in building a stable, secure, and inclusive Papua New Guinea,” he said. “The power to make a difference lies in your hands—through every decision, every action, every choice you make.”
In his concluding remarks, Prime Minister Marape reaffirmed his belief in the strength and promise of Papua New Guinea’s younger generation.
“I believe in our youth. I believe in your ability to lead, to influence, and to drive meaningful change,” he said. “Let us move forward together—united in our values and determined in our pursuit of a better, more harmonious Papua New Guinea.”
