Port Moresby, 21 March 2025 — A proud moment unfolded today at Igam Barracks Officers' Mess as two officers of the Joint Forces Australia (JFA) were formally promoted to the rank of Captain in a solemn and well-attended ceremony.

Lieutenant Colonel (LtCol) Deleni Rida, Commander of the JFA, officiated the event. The ceremony featured a meaningful tradition where each of the newly promoted officers—Enom Gabriel and Lane William—were assisted by a close relative in the symbolic act of replacing their Lieutenant rank insignia with the new Captain rank slides, marking their advancement in military leadership.

The occasion was witnessed by officers from all three units stationed at Igam Barracks, reflecting the strong camaraderie and mutual support within the forces. Family members and friends of Captains Gabriel and William were also present, adding a personal and celebratory atmosphere to the event.

LtCol Velmore Kagena, Commanding Officer of the Engineer Battalion, delivered the closing remarks, underscoring the significant responsibilities and higher expectations that accompany the rank of Captain. He reminded the officers that this promotion not only recognizes their past achievements but also entrusts them with greater leadership roles in guiding their troops and contributing to the operational effectiveness of their units.

“Being promoted to Captain is more than a change of insignia; it symbolizes a transition to greater accountability and leadership,” said LtCol Kagena. “You are now expected to demonstrate exemplary professionalism, tactical acumen, and mentorship to junior officers and soldiers alike.”

The promotion ceremony also served as an opportunity to reinforce the JFA’s commitment to cultivating skilled and dedicated leaders who can meet the evolving challenges faced by the Defence Force in Papua New Guinea and the broader region.

Captain Enom Gabriel and Captain Lane William have both demonstrated exceptional dedication and competence in their military careers, earning the respect of their peers and superiors. Their advancement marks a new chapter as they take on expanded command duties and play a critical role in supporting the mission and vision of the JFA.

The ceremony concluded with heartfelt congratulations from all in attendance, as the newly promoted captains prepared to embrace the responsibilities of their new rank and continue serving with distinction.

This promotion reflects the JFA’s ongoing investment in professional development and leadership excellence within its ranks, crucial for maintaining operational readiness and strengthening Papua New Guinea’s national security.
