Wabag, 19 June 2025 – The much-anticipated rural housing initiative, Rausim Kunai, Putim Kaipai, officially commenced in Maramuni, marking a significant step toward delivering on the Election 2022 promise to improve rural housing and community infrastructure across Wabag.
The program aims to empower local communities by providing timber sawmills to each ward, with roofing iron supplied by the Wabag District Development Authority (WDDA). Labour and timber will be sourced locally, fostering a strong partnership between government and the people to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative.
At the heart of the launch, 14 walkabout sawmills were distributed—one for each council ward—accompanied by training sessions conducted by a specialist trainer from Bishop Brothers based in Hagen. Representatives from all 14 wards, including those from the far-flung Sepik plains such as Penale and Ned, gathered at Maramuni Station to participate.
Initially, the program will prioritize constructing new classrooms for six recently opened schools in the Maramuni area, before expanding to other government buildings and eventually rural housing projects.
This community-driven program exemplifies government funding translating into tangible services and improved living conditions for the people of Wabag.
Officials encourage all locals to actively participate in this collaborative effort to build stronger, safer homes and enhance educational infrastructure.
