Hon. Francesca Semoso Makes History as First Female to Preside Over PNG Parliament

Port Moresby, 22 March 2025 — Hon. Francesca Semoso, Member of Parliament for North Bougainville, has made history as the first female MP in Papua New Guinea since independence in 1975 to preside over a parliamentary session.

Following her appointment as Assistant Speaker during the previous parliamentary sitting last year, Hon. Semoso officially took the chair in Parliament today, marking a significant milestone for gender equality in PNG’s political landscape.

This historic achievement comes as the country prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence later this year, highlighting progress toward increased representation and empowerment of women in leadership roles.

In her opening address, Hon. Semoso expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity and dedicated the momentous occasion to the women of Papua New Guinea. Her leadership role underscores the Parliament’s commitment to greater gender inclusivity and mirrors the themes celebrated during International Women’s Day earlier this month.

Fellow parliamentarians warmly welcomed her achievement, praising her leadership and emphasizing the importance of supporting women’s participation in politics to achieve equal representation.

As Assistant Speaker, Hon. Semoso is expected to serve as an inspiration for future generations of PNG women aspiring to leadership positions in government and public service.
