Port Moresby, 21 March 2025 — The long-standing partnership between Papua New Guinea and Australia has marked another milestone with the launch of the Moresby Arts Theatre (MAT) Enhancement Project, a PGK 11.3 million initiative funded through the PNG-Australia Incentive Fund.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday in Port Moresby to celebrate the project, which aims to preserve PNG’s rich cultural heritage and nurture the next generation of artists.
Michael Kumung, Officer-in-Charge of the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, praised the Australia-PNG partnership for its continued support of PNG’s development through flagship programs such as the Incentive Fund.
Australia’s Minister Counsellor for Economics, Health and Infrastructure, Dr. Cate Rogers, highlighted the project as a symbol of the strong cultural ties between the two nations, especially as PNG prepares to celebrate its 50th independence anniversary.
The upgrade will include the construction of a new rehearsal and lecture hall, enhancements to theatre infrastructure, and improved water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
Since its establishment in 1912, MAT has been a cornerstone of PNG’s creative arts scene, staging over 300 productions and developing local talent. The redevelopment will expand its capacity to offer arts education programs, including drama, technical training, and craft classes—particularly benefiting women, youth, and people with disabilities.
The event was attended by key figures including Mr. Bob Stanley, President of Moresby Arts Theatre; Michael Kumung from DNPM; Dr. Cate Rogers from the Australian High Commission; Hon. Powes Parkop, Governor of the National Capital District; and Hon. Lohia Boi Samuel, MP for Moresby Northwest Open.
The enhancement of MAT underscores the vital role of cultural development within PNG’s broader growth agenda and the enduring friendship between Papua New Guinea and Australia.
