Tongan Women’s Military Rugby Team Makes Historic Debut on World Stage

In a landmark moment for Pacific sports, His Majesty’s Armed Forces (HMAF) Women’s Rugby Team has departed for the United Kingdom to compete in the prestigious International Defence Rugby Championship – the first Tongan military women’s team to do so.

The trailblazing squad, supported by the Australian Defence Force, was farewelled in a ceremony attended by HRH Princess Sinaitakala Tuku’aho and Defence leadership. For many players, this marks their first international travel experience, transforming from local athletes to global ambassadors for Tongan rugby.

Breaking New Ground
The team’s preparation benefited from the expertise of Australian Major Caroline Fairs, a former Wallaroo and current Assistant Defence Advisor, who provided high-performance coaching and mentorship. This collaboration reflects the growing Australia-Tonga defence partnership extending into sports diplomacy.

“These women aren’t just representing Tongan rugby – they’re shattering ceilings for Pacific women in sport,” said Brigadier Lord Fielakepa during the send-off. Their participation demonstrates the Tongan military’s commitment to gender inclusion through sports.

More Than a Game
The championship (dates) serves as both athletic competition and career development:

  • Exposure to elite international rugby standards
  • Professional development through military networking
  • Inspiring young Tongan girls to pursue rugby

Australia’s support continues its investment in Pacific sports partnerships, having previously assisted Tonga’s men’s Ikale Tahi team. The women’s debut coincides with growing regional interest in women’s rugby following Fiji’s historic Olympic qualification.

As the team prepares for their first match, Tongan communities worldwide are rallying behind the hashtag #HMAFGoForGold. Their journey represents a new chapter for Pacific women in defence sports – where grassroots talent meets global opportunity.
