Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, currently in Houston for high-level meetings with ExxonMobil, has extended heartfelt condolences to U.S. President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott following the devastating floods that have swept through Central Texas.
More than 100 lives have been lost, with many families still searching for missing loved ones.
“This is a moment of great sorrow for our friends in Texas. On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I send our deepest sympathies,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who have perished, and with the communities still reeling from this disaster.”
Texas Floods: A Tragic Natural Disaster
The catastrophic flooding — the worst in Texas since the 1920s — was caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, which struck between 4 and 7 July.
In a matter of hours, torrential rain caused rivers like the Guadalupe River to rise by nearly 30 feet, sweeping away homes, bridges, and summer camps in several counties.

Papua New Guinea Stands in Solidarity
Prime Minister Marape reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s commitment to global friendship in difficult times:
“Papua New Guineans share in your grief. Tragedy knows no borders, and our shared humanity is strongest in moments like this. We extend our arms in solidarity and friendship.”
He also took a moment to commend first responders in Texas for their courage and dedication in the face of overwhelming destruction.

Prime Minister Marape is currently in Houston, Texas for strategic meetings with ExxonMobil Corporation to discuss long-term investments in PNG’s LNG and energy sector. Despite his busy agenda, he made time to issue this compassionate message to the people of Texas and the broader United States.
