Prime Minister Marape Congratulates United States on 249th Independence Anniversary, Highlights Shared Democratic and Christian Values

St. Louis, Missouri | Friday, 4 July 2025 –

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has extended warm congratulations to President Donald J. Trump, the United States Government, and the American people on the celebration of 249 years of independence.

In his Independence Day message, Prime Minister Marape praised the U.S. for its enduring commitment to liberty, democracy, and faith, calling it a global leader and a source of inspiration to nations like Papua New Guinea.

“The United States is the world’s greatest free-market economy, the greatest democracy, and the greatest Christian nation,” Marape said.

A Message of Shared Principles

Prime Minister Marape is currently in St. Louis, Missouri, attending the 62nd General Conference Session of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he was invited to deliver remarks on “PNG for Christ 2024”, a major national Christian outreach initiative.

Reflecting on the timing of the event — held on American Independence Day — the Prime Minister described it as a powerful reminder of religious liberty and the universal values shared by both nations.

“The 4th of July is not only a celebration of U.S. independence, but also of the global spread of Christian faith and the reaffirmation of liberty,” he noted.
“The United States stands as a beacon of freedom, faith, and opportunity — where every person has the chance to become the best version of themselves.”

Faith and Freedom in Papua New Guinea

Prime Minister Marape reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s commitment to religious freedom, citing Section 43 of the PNG Constitution, which protects freedom of conscience and religious belief.

“Like the United States, Papua New Guinea is a land of great diversity — not through immigration, but through our deep and rich indigenous roots,” he said.
“We cherish our own freedom, faith, and unity in diversity.”

Inspiration from America’s Democratic Journey

The Prime Minister acknowledged the nearly 250-year journey of American nation-building, saying the U.S. continues to serve as a global example of free enterprise, democratic governance, and religious tolerance.

“As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate 50 years of independence in September 2025, we look to strong partners like the United States for guidance and inspiration,” he said.

A Message of Friendship and Solidarity

Prime Minister Marape concluded his statement by extending Papua New Guinea’s best wishes to President Trump and the American people.

“On this important day in your national calendar, we send heartfelt congratulations from the Government and people of Papua New Guinea. May the enduring friendship between our two nations continue to grow in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect.”
