The recent return of the SingHealth team to Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) marks another milestone in a decade-long partnership that is saving young lives and building local healthcare capacity in Papua New Guinea. From June 30 to July 4, the combined expertise of Singapore’s top cardiac specialists and PMGH surgeons resulted in nine successful paediatric open-heart surgeries and a device closure, offering hope and health to children who otherwise would face bleak prospects.
This mission exemplifies how international collaboration can make a profound difference in countries with limited medical resources. Beyond the surgeries themselves, the project embodies a crucial transfer of knowledge and skills. The leadership of Dr Ong Kim Kiat and Associate Professor Chua Yeow Leng, alongside the dedication of local surgeons like Dr Noah Tapaua, demonstrates a shared vision: empowering PNG’s medical teams to independently manage complex cardiac cases in the near future.
Such partnerships are vital. PNG’s healthcare system faces challenges including resource constraints, specialist shortages, and geographic barriers. The involvement of organisations like Operation Open Heart Foundation, along with generous support from corporate partners and community groups, amplifies the impact, ensuring the sustainability of these life-saving services.
The success of this mission is not just in the surgeries performed, but in the trust and long-term commitment it builds. As PMGH CEO Dr Paki Molumi emphasized, this collaboration is more than clinical procedures—it’s about fostering resilience, capacity, and hope within the local healthcare system.
Looking ahead, continued support and investment are critical to transform these short-term missions into permanent, locally led cardiac programs. PNG’s children deserve access to world-class care close to home, and this partnership is a powerful step toward that goal.
In sum, the SingHealth-PMGH collaboration is a beacon of what global health partnerships can achieve—combining expertise, compassion, and resources to save lives and build a healthier future for Papua New Guinea.
