East Sepik Power Progress Expected Soon, Says Allan Bird

East Sepik Province, June 2025 – Following years of efforts to resolve power shortages in East Sepik Province (ESP), local MP Allan Bird announced positive developments after a recent meeting with a potential power provider and donor partners.

Speaking on June 5, Mr. Bird said, “For the last eight years, the open MPs, the provincial administration, and I have been searching for a sustainable power solution. We are now confident that once the National Energy Authority (NEA) issues the necessary licenses, the new provider will move swiftly to address the ongoing power challenges in ESP.”

He emphasized the urgency for NEA to expedite the licensing process, urging, “On behalf of the long-suffering Sepik people, I call on NEA to urgently issue these licenses so our communities can finally gain access to reliable electricity.”

The lack of power has severely impacted critical services in the province, including water supply systems and the operation of the main referral hospital at Boram. Small business owners and everyday residents also face considerable hardships due to persistent electricity shortages.

Mr. Bird expressed hope that all paperwork will soon be finalized, allowing for an official announcement and the commencement of improved power services in East Sepik.
