Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has concluded a successful visit to Palau, where he attended the inauguration of President Surangel Whipps Jr. and engaged in strategic discussions on regional collaboration.
In a press conference after arriving from Palau, Prime Minister Marape shared key outcomes of the visit, emphasising Papua New Guinea’s commitment to strengthening ties with Pacific Island nations and focusing on shared interests such as fisheries, maritime security, and regional economic development.
Key outcomes of the visit include:
1. Regional Fisheries Cooperation: Discussions on enhancing sustainable fisheries management and leveraging the Vessel Day Scheme (VDS) for mutual economic benefit.
2. Tourism and Connectivity: Plans to explore direct flight routes between PNG, Palau, and other markets, boosting tourism and trade.
3. Cultural and Historical Ties: Recognition of shared cultural heritage, with many Palauans tracing their roots to PNG.
4. Strategic Development Partnerships: Proposals to expand fisheries processing hubs in PNG, particularly in Manus, to drive economic growth and job creation.
Prime Minister Marape emphasised the importance of regional partnerships in addressing shared challenges like climate change, marine conservation, and economic resilience.
As PNG celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of such collaborations in shaping the nation’s future prosperity.
