Special Alumni Reception Celebrates 50 Years of Education Partnership Between Papua New Guinea and New Zealand

Port Moresby, 25 March 2025 — A special Alumni Reception was held this evening to commemorate over five decades of educational ties between Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, highlighting the enduring partnership that has empowered thousands of Papua New Guineans through quality education opportunities.

The event was graced by Dr. Shane Reti, Member of Parliament and Minister in the New Zealand Government, symbolizing the strong diplomatic and educational relations between the two countries.

New Zealand’s commitment to Papua New Guinea’s development dates back to the late 1970s, even before PNG’s independence, when it supported the training of journalism students at the University of Papua New Guinea. Since then, New Zealand has awarded a range of scholarships—most notably the prestigious Maanaki Scholarships—enabling over 570 Papua New Guineans to pursue degrees at New Zealand and Pacific universities.

The Government of Papua New Guinea expressed deep gratitude for New Zealand’s continued support in advancing the nation’s human capital. “Education is the key to success for any country and remains our number one priority,” said a government representative. “We are proud of the achievements of our students and workforce members who have benefitted from this program and look forward to expanding cooperation beyond education into other diplomatic and bilateral areas.”

The reception also acknowledged the success of the labour mobility program between the two countries, which has grown from an initial 180 Papua New Guinean participants to nearly 800, creating valuable opportunities for skills development and employment.

The Papua New Guinea government pledged to continue working closely with New Zealand to broaden access to education, strengthen capacity-building efforts, and support its people in achieving their ambitions.

Special thanks were extended to New Zealand High Commissioner H.E. Peter Zwart, the New Zealand High Commission, and the New Zealand Government for facilitating these life-changing opportunities.

“Opportunities for quality education under New Zealand’s Maanaki Scholarships mark a significant step forward for our people and our country,” the statement concluded.

Congratulations were extended to all Papua New Guineans who have graduated or are currently studying under these programs, celebrating their success as a testament to the enduring partnership between the two nations.
